'Capacity augmentation, value-added applications critical for making India leader in stainless steel production'

Business To Business, New Delhi, 27th June, 2026:   India's stainless-steel industry has the potential to become a global manufacturing leader through sustained investments in capacity expansion, technological innovation and value-added products, according to Abhyuday Jindal.
Jindal said the industry is at a defining stage of its growth and that continued investment in advanced manufacturing, product development and higher-value applications will be critical to strengthening India's global competitiveness.
"India's stainless-steel industry stands at a defining moment. With sustained investments in capacity expansion, technological advancement, product innovation and value-added applications, India has the potential to emerge as a global hub for stainless steel manufacturing," he said.
According to the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association, India's stainless-steel production currently stands at 5.16 million tonnes, compared with global production of 64.2 million tonnes.
The industry body also noted that India's per capita stainless-steel consumption is around 3.4 kilograms, significantly below the global average of 6 kilograms, indicating considerable scope for future domestic demand growth.
Industry leaders believe that rising infrastructure development, urbanisation, manufacturing expansion and increasing adoption of stainless steel across sectors such as construction, transportation, consumer goods and renewable energy will support long-term growth.
The sector sees capacity enhancement, technological upgrades and increased use of value-added stainless-steel products as key drivers for positioning India as a major global production and export hub.
