Adani Group keen on Hooghly river tunnel, power, infra projects in Bengal: Official
Business To Business, New Delhi, 18th June, 2026: The Adani Group is exploring opportunities to expand its footprint in West Bengal, with a particular focus on large-scale infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity and logistics.
Proposed Hooghly river tunnel
According to a company official, one of the ideas being considered is an under-river tunnel beneath the Hooghly River, which could help:
- Improve connectivity between Kolkata and surrounding highway networks.
- Ease traffic congestion in and around the city.
- Facilitate smoother movement of cargo and commercial vehicles.
- Strengthen regional logistics infrastructure.
The official noted that such a project would be consistent with the group's experience in executing major infrastructure developments across ports, transport, logistics, energy, and urban infrastructure.
The company indicated that it is interested in increasing investments in the state and remains willing to engage with the government on policy measures that could encourage greater private-sector participation.
According to the official, investors generally seek:
- Transparent and predictable policy frameworks.
- Faster approvals and clear regulatory processes.
- Long-term infrastructure planning.
- Ease of doing business and investment certainty.
If pursued, a Hooghly river tunnel could become a significant addition to Kolkata's transport infrastructure. The city already relies on multiple bridges and transport corridors across the river, and an additional crossing could help reduce bottlenecks and improve freight movement.
Such projects can also generate:
- Construction-related employment.
- Increased economic activity.
- Better logistics efficiency.
- Enhanced connectivity between industrial and commercial zones.
The Adani Group has not announced a formal proposal or investment commitment for the tunnel project. The company has indicated that it is open to making formal submissions to the state government regarding infrastructure opportunities and policy reforms that could support future investments in West Bengal.
Any such project would require detailed feasibility studies, regulatory approvals, environmental clearances, and coordination with state and central authorities before moving forward.
