BMC imposes 20 pc cut in water supply for industrial, commercial purposes as reservoir levels dip
Business To Business, Mumbai, 16th June, 2026: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Tuesday announced a 20% reduction in water supply to industrial, commercial, and sports establishments in Mumbai as water levels in the city's reservoirs fell sharply due to a delayed monsoon.
The restrictions will come into effect from Wednesday.
Measures announced by BMC
The civic body said it has decided to:
- Cut water supply to industrial establishments by 20%.
- Reduce water supply to commercial establishments by 20%.
- Reduce water supply to sports facilities by 20%.
- Suspend water connections for construction activities.
- Suspend water supply for swimming pools.
According to the BMC, the decision was necessitated by declining water reserves, with reservoir storage dropping to
10.35% of total capacity.
Mumbai depends on a network of reservoirs located in and around the metropolitan region for its drinking water supply. Delays or deficiencies in monsoon rainfall can significantly affect available water stocks before the rainy season replenishes them.
The restrictions are expected to affect:
- Manufacturing and industrial units.
- Commercial establishments such as malls and office complexes.
- Sports clubs and recreational facilities.
- Ongoing construction projects.
- Private and public swimming pools.
Domestic water supply has not been reported as part of the current cutback measures.
The BMC will closely monitor rainfall and reservoir inflows over the coming days. If monsoon rains improve and reservoir levels rise, the restrictions could be reviewed. Conversely, prolonged delays in rainfall may require additional conservation measures to ensure adequate drinking water supplies for the city's residents.
The announcement underscores the importance of monsoon rainfall for Mumbai's water security and the challenges urban authorities face when reservoir levels decline before the rainy season gains momentum.
