Coal Ministry closure report of 42 mines highlights ecological restoration, sustainable land reuse

Business To Business, New Delhi, 23rd July, 2026:  The Ministry of Coal on Wednesday released AAROH: Annual Report on Mine Closure, highlighting India's progress in scientific mine closure, ecological restoration and sustainable post-mining land use.
The report, released at a function in New Delhi, documents the scientific closure of 42 coal mines and outlines structured reclamation processes, ecological restoration initiatives, sustainable post-mining land utilisation, and community-focused interventions that have helped transform former mining sites into environmentally restored and socially beneficial landscapes.
Speaking at the event, Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy said the government's approach to mine closure has undergone a significant shift.
"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we have changed the very philosophy of mine closure. It has now become a national as well as a ministry priority. We no longer see it as the end of mining, but as the beginning of new opportunities," Reddy said.
