Delhi EV policy: State can become benchmark for rest of country, say industry players

Business To Business, New Delhi, 29th June, 2026:   Industry leaders on Monday said that if Delhi successfully transitions into a predominantly electric vehicle (EV)-driven city, it could become a national benchmark for sustainable urban mobility while helping address the capital's long-standing air pollution challenge.
Under its new EV policy, the Delhi government has announced that all electric cars priced at up to Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom) and registered in the National Capital will receive a full exemption from road tax and registration fees.
The policy also outlines a phased transition towards cleaner mobility. From January 1, 2027, only electric auto-rickshaws will be eligible for registration in Delhi.
In addition, the registration of new petrol and CNG-powered two-wheelers will be phased out, with only electric two-wheelers to be registered from April 1, 2028.
Industry stakeholders said the measures could accelerate EV adoption, reduce vehicular emissions, stimulate investment in charging infrastructure and strengthen India's electric mobility ecosystem.
They added that if implemented effectively, Delhi's policy could serve as a model for other states, demonstrating how regulatory support and fiscal incentives can drive the transition to cleaner transportation while improving urban air quality.
