Ethiopian national Gebremariam to be 2nd foreign CEO for Air India

Business To Business, New Delhi, 05 August, 2026:   Air India has appointed Tewolde Gebremariam as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD), succeeding Campbell Wilson, who announced his resignation in April.
Gebremariam brings nearly four decades of aviation experience, primarily with Ethiopian Airlines Group, where he held several leadership roles, including serving as Chief Executive Officer for more than 11 years.
Professional background

  • Nearly 40 years of experience in the aviation industry.
  • Served as CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group for over 11 years, during which the airline expanded its global network and operations.
  • Currently serves as:
    • Senior Strategic Advisor to Delta Air Lines.
    • Senior Strategic Advisor to the International Finance Corporation (IFC)/World Bank Group.
His appointment comes as Air India continues its multi-year transformation and expansion under the Tata Group, with a focus on fleet modernisation, service improvements, network expansion and operational efficiency.
