FinMin for creation of two globally competitive banks as part of Viksit Bharat vision

Business To Business, New Delhi, 12 September 2025: India aspires to establish two globally competitive banking institutions, whose asset portfolios will position them among the top twenty financial institutions worldwide, as part of its ambitious 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision to attain developed nation status, according to a senior government official.

The aspiration to cultivate internationally competitive banks was a central topic of discussion on the inaugural day of the two-day PSB Manthan 2025 conference, organized by the Department of Financial Services here.

Presently, the nation’s largest financial entity, State Bank of India (SBI), ranks as the 43rd largest bank globally in terms of assets, while HDFC Bank, a prominent private sector lender, stands as the second Indian bank to feature in the top 100, occupying the 73rd position.
