FSSAI seeks explanation from Blinkit, after complaint of sale of bad-quality curd on its platform

Business To Business, New Delhi, 31st May, 2026:   The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has reportedly sought an explanation from Blinkit following a consumer complaint alleging illness after consuming curd purchased through the quick-commerce platform.
According to sources, FSSAI received a written complaint from an individual who claimed to have fallen sick after eating the curd and subsequently required medical treatment. The complaint reportedly included a medical prescription as supporting documentation.
What the regulator is examining
FSSAI is understood to have asked Blinkit to provide details regarding:

  • The product supplied.
  • The seller or supplier involved.
  • Storage and handling conditions.
  • The platform's quality-control and food-safety procedures.
At this stage, the regulator's action appears to be part of a preliminary fact-finding process. Seeking an explanation does not by itself establish that the product caused the illness.
Potential next steps
Depending on the findings, authorities could:
  • Review the product's supply chain.
  • Conduct food safety inspections or testing if required.
  • Seek additional information from the complainant, the supplier, and the platform.
  • Take regulatory action if any violation of food safety norms is found.
Growing scrutiny of online food sales
The case highlights increasing regulatory attention on food products sold through e-commerce and quick-commerce platforms. While these platforms typically act as marketplaces or delivery intermediaries, food products sold through them must comply with standards set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.
Neither FSSAI nor Blinkit had publicly disclosed the outcome of the matter at the time of the report. The investigation is at an early stage, and the cause of the reported illness has not been officially established.
