Business To Business, New Delhi, 18 September 2025: The government aspires to diminish post-harvest losses in horticulture to below five percent by the year 2047, a significant reduction from the current rate of fifteen percent, according to a senior official from the Ministry of Agriculture.
During the inaugural session of REFCOLD India 2025 in the national capital, Priya Ranjan, Joint Secretary for Horticulture at the Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted that as the world's second-largest producer of horticultural produce, the nation currently incurs an annual loss of nearly fifteen million tonnes from a total output of three hundred and sixty-five million tonnes.
"Post-harvest losses reaching up to fifteen percent equate to approximately fifteen million tonnes of squandered produce—an inefficiency that affects not only farmers and consumers but also poses a threat to our nutritional security and economic stability," Ranjan articulated during the three-day conference.
