Govt bars communication infra providers from sharing data outside India

Business To Business, New Delhi, 24^th July, 2026:   The government has prohibited communication infrastructure providers, including operators of cloud-based telecom networks, mobile towers and satellite gateways, from sharing telecom-related data outside India under a new authorisation framework issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
According to an official notification dated July 20, all telecommunication data associated with authorised entities must be stored exclusively within the country.
The new rules require every newly authorised infrastructure provider to ensure that all systems supporting its telecommunication network, along with the related data, logs and information, are hosted in India.
"Every new authorised entity shall ensure that all systems of its telecommunication network and the data, logs and information associated with its telecommunication network shall be stored within India and no copies of such data, logs and information shall be routed, shared or made available outside India," the notification said.
The move strengthens India's data localisation requirements for the telecom sector and is aimed at enhancing data security, safeguarding critical communication infrastructure, and ensuring greater regulatory oversight over telecom network operations.
