Govt examining possibility to introduce standard packaging for cooking oil

Business To Business, New Delhi, 25th May, 2026:   The Department of Consumer Affairs on Monday said it is considering the introduction of standard packaging sizes for edible oils under the legal metrology framework.
According to an official statement, the department is examining the possibility of implementing standard pack sizes for cooking oils after industry bodies raised concerns over the growing prevalence of irregular and random package sizes in the retail market.
The proposal follows recommendations from major industry associations representing nearly 90 per cent of India’s edible oil sector.
The move is aimed at improving:

  • Pricing transparency for consumers
  • Uniformity in retail packaging
  • Ease of product comparison
  • Compliance under legal metrology rules
If implemented, standardisation could affect packaging practices across a wide range of edible oil products sold in the Indian market.
