Govt imposes import curbs on silver

Business To Business, New Delhi, 16th May 2026: The Directorate General of Foreign Trade on Saturday imposed import restrictions on silver, days after the government sharply increased customs duties on precious metals.
Earlier, on May 13, the Government of India had raised import duty on precious metals from 6 per cent to 15 per cent.
In a notification, the DGFT said the import policy for silver, including silver plated with gold and platinum, had been revised from “free” to “restricted” with immediate effect.
The move means imports of these items will now require specific authorisation or approval from the government.
The decision comes amid concerns over rising imports, pressure on the trade balance and volatility in global precious metal markets.
