Govt kick-starts mega AMCA stealth fighter jet programme

Business To Business, New Delhi, 27th May, 2026:   India’s Ministry of Defence has initiated the formal process for the development and production of the indigenous Advanced Multirole Combat Aircraft (AMCA), a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet project considered crucial for strengthening the country’s air combat capabilities.
As part of the process, the government has reportedly issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to major private-sector defence and engineering firms, including:

  • Tata Advanced Systems
  • Larsen and Toubro
  • Bharat Forge
The move is significant because state-run aerospace manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), traditionally India’s primary military aircraft producer, has reportedly been excluded from the initial selection process.
The AMCA programme is one of India’s most ambitious indigenous defence aviation projects. The aircraft is expected to feature:
  • Stealth technology
  • Advanced avionics and sensors
  • Supercruise capability
  • Internal weapons bays
  • Multirole combat functionality
The project is being overseen by the Aeronautical Development Agency in collaboration with the Indian Air Force.
The decision to involve private-sector firms more directly reflects the government’s broader push for:
  • Greater private participation in defence manufacturing
  • Reduced dependence on imports
  • Faster execution of strategic programmes under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative
The AMCA is expected to become a key component of India’s future air power strategy as the country seeks to modernise its fighter fleet amid evolving regional security challenges.
