Govt launches White Rabbit tech network to secure Indian Standard Time

Business To Business, New Delhi, 19th July, 2026:   The Centre on Saturday announced the commissioning of a demonstration network that uses "White Rabbit" precision timing technology to distribute a secure and tamper-resistant national time signal, as part of efforts to reduce India's reliance on foreign timing sources for critical infrastructure.
The network was inaugurated last week by Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi at the Regional Reference Standard Laboratory (RRSL) in Bengaluru. The project has been jointly developed by the Department of Consumer Affairs, the CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
According to the ministry, the system disseminates Indian Standard Time (IST), traceable to the national timekeeping authority UTC (NPLI), using Precision Time Protocol-based White Rabbit technology. It provides highly accurate time synchronisation for critical sectors such as banking, telecommunications, power grids, transportation and digital governance.
