Handicraft, ODOP items to get major exports boost from FDI in inventory-based e-comm: Official

Business To Business, New Delhi, 02 August, 2026:   The government's decision to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in an inventory-based e-commerce model exclusively for exports is expected to significantly boost overseas shipments of handicrafts and One District One Product (ODOP) goods, according to an official.
The move is aimed at strengthening India's export ecosystem by enabling global e-commerce companies to source and export Indian products directly, thereby improving market access for local manufacturers, artisans and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
The One District One Product (ODOP) initiative, led by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, promotes at least one unique product from every district to enhance manufacturing, branding and exports.
Key highlights:

  • The new FDI policy applies only to export-oriented inventory-based e-commerce operations and does not change the rules for domestic e-commerce.
  • It is expected to increase global demand for handicrafts, traditional products and other locally manufactured goods.
  • Under the ODOP framework, 1,244 products have been identified across 773 districts in India, showcasing the country's diverse manufacturing and artisanal strengths.
Officials believe the policy will provide greater international visibility to ODOP products, improve export opportunities for local producers, and contribute to India's overall merchandise export growth.
