Business To Business, Mumbai, 11th July, 2026: HDFC Bank Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan on Saturday acknowledged that the sudden resignation of the bank's part-time Chairman Atanu Chakraborty was a challenging development and led to questions about the bank's governance standards.
Chakraborty stepped down as part-time chairman on March 18, more than a year before the completion of his tenure, citing ethical concerns as the reason for his resignation.
Speaking on the issue, Jagdishan said the unexpected exit posed a significant challenge for the country's largest private sector lender and inevitably prompted scrutiny of its corporate governance practices.
Chakraborty's resignation marked the first instance of a part-time chairman leaving HDFC Bank before completing his term, making it an unprecedented event in the bank's history and attracting attention from stakeholders and market participants.
