Hopeful JSW's Rs 65,000 cr steel plant will be completed by 2029, to boost industrialisation: Majhi

Business To Business, Bhubaneswar, 27th May, 2026:   Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday expressed confidence that the ₹65,000-crore integrated steel plant being developed by JSW Utkal Steel Limited near Paradip would be operational by 2029 and would become a major milestone in Odisha’s industrial development.
The chief minister attended the groundbreaking event for the 13.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant at Dhinkia near Paradip in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district.
The project is significant because it is being built at the same location where South Korean steel giant POSCO had proposed a 12 MTPA steel plant in 2005 with an investment of ₹52,000 crore. That earlier project was eventually abandoned after prolonged protests by local residents and issues related to raw material linkages.
The new JSW project is expected to:

  • Strengthen Odisha’s position as a major steel-producing hub
  • Generate large-scale employment opportunities
  • Boost port-led industrial development around Paradip
  • Support downstream industries and infrastructure growth
Odisha is rich in mineral resources, particularly iron ore, making it a key destination for steel investments in India. The state already hosts several major steel and metals companies and has been actively promoting large industrial projects under its manufacturing and infrastructure push.
The commencement of construction also marks one of the largest recent industrial investments in eastern India and is being viewed as an important revival of the long-delayed industrialisation plans for the Dhinkia-Paradip region.
