India may withdraw emergency fuel-supply measures once global situation stabilises, official says

Business To Business, New Delhi, 18th June, 2026:   The Indian government is expected to review and gradually withdraw a number of emergency energy-security measures that were introduced during heightened tensions in West Asia, provided the geopolitical situation continues to improve.
The precautions were put in place amid concerns that conflict in the region could disrupt global oil and gas supply chains, particularly through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The measures reportedly included:

  • Enhanced monitoring of LPG availability and distribution.
  • Reprioritisation of domestic natural gas allocations to critical sectors.
  • Measures to discourage fuel hoarding and speculative stockpiling.
  • Closer oversight of energy imports and supply logistics.
These steps were intended to ensure that India's domestic energy needs remained protected in the event of prolonged disruptions to global markets.
The reassessment comes after the United States and Iran released the text of an interim agreement signed by their presidents to end the 111-day conflict between the two countries.
If successfully implemented, the agreement could:
  • Reduce geopolitical risks in the Gulf region.
  • Restore confidence in international energy markets.
  • Facilitate the normalisation of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Ease concerns over interruptions to crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.
India is one of the world's largest importers of crude oil and depends heavily on energy shipments passing through the Gulf region. Any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz can affect:
  • Crude oil prices.
  • Domestic fuel costs.
  • Inflation and transportation expenses.
  • Industrial energy supplies.
A sustained improvement in regional stability could therefore help moderate energy prices, reduce supply risks, and lessen the need for extraordinary government interventions.
Officials are likely to monitor developments closely before making significant policy changes. Any rollback of emergency measures is expected to be gradual, ensuring that India retains sufficient safeguards against potential future disruptions while benefiting from improved conditions in global energy markets.
The situation remains dependent on the durability of the US-Iran agreement and the broader security environment in West Asia.
