Business To Business, New Delhi, 05th July, 2026: Indonesia is increasingly looking towards India not only as a strategic partner but also as a trusted source of technology, policy innovation and development solutions, government officials said on Sunday, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the country.
Modi is scheduled to visit Indonesia from July 6 to 8, with the trip expected to further strengthen bilateral ties that are expanding well beyond traditional areas of cooperation such as trade and defence.
Officials said the evolving partnership reflects Indonesia's growing interest in adopting India's successful digital public infrastructure and governance models. A key initiative under discussion is the proposed linkage between India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Indonesia's Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS), the national QR-based payment system developed by the Bank of Indonesia.
Once implemented, the integration will enable Indian tourists travelling to Bali and other Indonesian destinations to make seamless digital payments using their mobile phones through UPI-enabled applications, eliminating the need for currency exchange or separate local payment platforms. The move is also expected to boost tourism, improve convenience for travellers and strengthen financial connectivity between the two countries.
Beyond digital payments, officials indicated that Indonesia sees significant value in collaborating with India on technology-driven governance, digital transformation and sustainable development initiatives. Modi's visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to these areas, underscoring the growing strategic and economic partnership between the two Indo-Pacific nations.
