ITA flags financial stress in tea sector despite record export of 280 million kg

Business To Business, Kolkata, 20th May, 2026:  Indian Tea Association on Wednesday highlighted growing financial stress in the tea sector despite India achieving record tea exports of 280.40 million kg in 2025.
Ahead of International Tea Day, the association called for urgent government support on pricing mechanisms, climate resilience and export competitiveness.
In a statement, the ITA said auction price realisations for tea have grown at a compounded annual rate of only 3.81 per cent over the past decade, while costs related to energy, fertilisers and other agricultural inputs have risen significantly, affecting the financial viability of tea estates.
India remains the world’s second-largest tea producer and third-largest exporter, accounting for around 19 per cent of global tea production. The country produced 1,369.98 million kg of tea in 2025, with exports valued at Rs 8,488.43 crore.
