Japan, South Korea officials flag hurdles in steel product shipments into Indian market

Business To Business, New Delhi, 03 March 2026: Officials from Japan and South Korea on Monday raised concerns about regulatory hurdles affecting steel exports to India.
Speaking at an event organised by the Ministry of Steel, the representatives highlighted challenges linked to:

  • Quality Control Orders (QCOs)
  • Safeguard duties
  • Other import-related restrictions
They sought intervention from the Indian government to address procedural and compliance-related bottlenecks that, according to them, are slowing shipments into the domestic market.
No Country-Specific Bias, Say Officials
While speaking to journalists later, the officials clarified that there is no country-specific discrimination in the regulatory process. They added that shipments lacking adequate documentation or failing to meet prescribed standards are being deterred as part of routine compliance checks.
Broader Context
India has tightened quality standards and imposed trade-protective measures in recent years to:
  • Safeguard domestic steel producers
  • Prevent dumping of low-cost imports
  • Ensure adherence to national quality benchmarks
The issue comes amid broader discussions on trade facilitation and regulatory harmonisation between India and its key Asian trade partners.
