Business To Business, Leh, 23rd May, 2026: Ladakh is set to host India’s first geothermal power project after Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena approved a five-year extension of the memorandum of understanding with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation for the initiative.
The project will be developed in the Puga Valley at an altitude of more than 14,000 feet in eastern Ladakh.
Officials said the project aims to commercially harness geothermal energy as a sustainable and clean alternative source of power. The region is known for its geothermal activity, including hot springs and underground heat reservoirs, making it suitable for such renewable energy development.
The initiative is expected to strengthen clean energy generation in the high-altitude Himalayan region while reducing dependence on conventional fossil-fuel-based power sources. It also marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to diversify its renewable energy portfolio beyond solar, wind, and hydropower.
