Oil cos say nationwide tests find E20 petrol meets quality norms, reject contamination claims

Business To Business New Delhi, 07 August, 2026:    State-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) on Friday said that additional nationwide testing of E20 petrol found no evidence to support recent claims of high moisture or chloride contamination, reaffirming that the fuel meets prescribed quality standards.
In a joint statement, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) said the intensified testing was undertaken following media reports alleging contamination in E20 petrol (petrol blended with 20% ethanol).
Key findings

  • No evidence was found to support claims of elevated moisture or chloride levels in E20 petrol.
  • Testing covered the entire fuel supply chain.
  • Fuel quality was found to be consistently well within prescribed limits.
The three OMCs said the results reaffirm the quality and reliability of E20 petrol being supplied across the country, indicating that it continues to comply with the applicable fuel quality specifications.
