Seed Industry Calls for Strengthening India's Agrobiodiversity Amid Global Supply Shocks

Business To Business, New Delhi, 23rd May, 2026:   The Federation of Seed Industry of India has stressed that agricultural biodiversity must now be treated as a strategic national asset rather than only an environmental concern, amid rising geopolitical tensions, climate volatility, and global supply chain disruptions.
According to Ajai Rana, seed diversity and resilient crop genetics function as a form of “insurance mechanism” for agriculture during crises such as extreme weather events, trade disruptions, or geopolitical conflicts. He argued that countries with diverse seed systems are better positioned to maintain food production stability and farmer livelihoods during periods of uncertainty.
Rana highlighted that India possesses a major strategic advantage through its extensive agrobiodiversity, including thousands of indigenous crop varieties adapted to different regional climates and conditions. He said this diversity, combined with scientific research and breeding innovation, gives India resilience that many nations lack.
The statement reflects growing global concern that food security is increasingly tied to:

  • Climate-resilient crop varieties
  • Localised seed systems
  • Reduced dependence on vulnerable international supply chains
  • Preservation of indigenous agricultural genetics
  • Science-led crop breeding and innovation
FSII’s remarks also align with wider international debates on how climate change, export restrictions, wars, and logistics disruptions can affect agricultural production and food availability worldwide. The organisation argued that strengthening biodiversity through research, innovation, and modern breeding practices should remain a long-term national priority for India’s agricultural and economic stability.
