Targeting to increase India's textile market size to Rs 33 lakh crore by FY2031: Giriraj Singh
Business To Business, New Delhi, 11th June, 2026: Giriraj Singh on Thursday said the government aims to expand India's textile market—covering both domestic sales and exports—to ₹33 lakh crore by 2030-31, up from the current level of around ₹16 lakh crore.
The minister outlined the textile sector's achievements and ongoing initiatives during a press conference reviewing the tenure of the government led by Narendra Modi.
Ambitious Growth Target
The target implies more than doubling the size of India's textile and apparel sector over the next five years, reflecting the government's focus on:
- Increasing textile exports.
- Strengthening domestic manufacturing.
- Promoting value-added products.
- Enhancing employment generation.
- Improving competitiveness in global markets.
Focus on Handloom Weavers
A major component of the strategy involves raising the earnings of handloom artisans.
According to Singh, the government aims to increase the annual income of handloom weavers to
₹5 lakh per year through support measures such as:
- Skill development and upskilling.
- Access to quality raw materials.
- Design and technology support.
- Better market linkages for products.
Weaving Service Centres
The minister highlighted the role of
Weaving Service Centres (WSCs) in supporting the handloom sector.
India currently has
29 Weaving Service Centres, which provide technical and design assistance to weavers.
He noted that a model aimed at training and supporting weavers has been established in six states, beginning with
Guwahati in the Northeast region.
Under this approach, trained weavers receive:
- Technical guidance.
- Improved designs.
- Modern production techniques.
- Access to markets for their products.
Importance of the Textile Sector
The textile and apparel sector is one of India's largest employers and plays a crucial role in:
- Rural livelihoods.
- Women's employment.
- Export earnings.
- Traditional crafts and handloom preservation.
The sector spans handloom, handicrafts, garments, technical textiles, and large-scale manufacturing units.
Achieving a market size of ₹33 lakh crore by 2030-31 will require sustained growth in both domestic consumption and exports. The government's strategy combines industrial expansion with support for traditional handloom communities, aiming to improve productivity, incomes, and market access while strengthening India's position in the global textile value chain.
