Total area under kharif crops down 4.7 pc as paddy, pulses sowing lag behind

Business To Business, New Delhi, 28th July, 2026:   The total area sown under kharif crops has declined 4.7 per cent to 787.37 lakh hectares (LH) so far in the ongoing sowing season, primarily due to lower acreage under paddy, pulses, coarse cereals, oilseeds and cotton, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Agriculture.
As of July 24, paddy had been sown over 234.43 lakh hectares, down 2.6 per cent from 240.62 lakh hectares during the corresponding period last year.
The area under pulses also declined to 84.57 lakh hectares, compared with 91.46 lakh hectares a year earlier.
Sowing of Shri Anna (millets) and other coarse cereals dropped to 142.21 lakh hectares from 161.49 lakh hectares in the same period last year.
Similarly, oilseed acreage fell to 163.54 lakh hectares, compared with 167 lakh hectares during the corresponding period of the previous season.
The ministry's data indicates that overall kharif sowing remains below last year's levels, with reduced coverage across several major crop categories during the current monsoon season.
