Tribunal absolves Lalit Modi of FEMA violation in 2009 South Africa IPL event

Business To Business, New Delhi, 22nd July, 2026:    In a significant relief to former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi, a tribunal has set aside a penalty imposed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a 15-year-old case under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) related to the hosting of the 2009 IPL tournament in South Africa.
Welcoming the tribunal's verdict, Modi said the judgment was not only a personal vindication but also reaffirmed the importance of due process, stressing that allegations must ultimately be tested against evidence and the law.
The 2009 IPL season was shifted to South Africa because of security concerns arising from the simultaneous conduct of the general elections in India.
