Upma Dada Chawdhry appointed as chairperson of Metropolitan Stock Exchange

Business To Business, New Delhi, 31st May, 2026:  Upma Dada Chawdhry has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India (MSE), becoming the first woman to head the exchange.
Before this appointment, Chawdhry served as a Public Interest Director at MSE.
Career highlights
A 1983-batch IAS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Chawdhry brings more than 35 years of experience in public administration and governance. During her civil service career, she held several senior positions, including:

  • Serving as the first woman Director of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie.
  • Holding the rank of Secretary to the Government of India, one of the highest positions in the Indian administrative system.
  • Retiring from government service in December 2020 after a distinguished bureaucratic career.
Significance of the appointment
Her appointment is notable for two reasons:
  1. Historic milestone – She is the first woman to become Chairperson of the Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India.
  2. Governance expertise – Her extensive experience in public policy, administration, and institutional leadership is expected to strengthen the exchange's governance framework and strategic direction.
The Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India is one of India's recognised stock exchanges and operates in areas including equity, currency, and debt market segments. Chawdhry's appointment comes at a time when Indian capital markets continue to expand in size and investor participation.
