World famous Basmati paddy sowing season begins in Jammu border, crop covers 63,000 ha

Business To Business, Jummu, 14th June, 2026:    The sowing season for the internationally renowned Jammu Basmati Rice has begun across the border areas of the Jammu Division, with officials expecting the crop to be cultivated on nearly 63,000 hectares of land in Jammu district, Samba district, and Kathua district.
A prized cash crop
Jammu Basmati is widely known for its:

  • Distinctive aroma
  • Long, fine grains
  • Superior cooking quality
  • Strong demand in domestic and export markets
The aromatic rice cultivated in the R S Pura belt received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2016, a recognition that has strengthened its market identity and helped promote its unique regional characteristics.
Sowing underway in border areas
Despite high temperatures, farm activity has intensified across several agricultural belts, including:
  • Gajansoo
  • Marh
  • R S Pura
  • Arnia
  • Bishnah
Scores of labourers, dressed in traditional farming attire, were seen transplanting paddy seedlings into waterlogged fields across these regions near the India–Pakistan border.
Economic importance
Basmati cultivation remains one of the most important agricultural activities in the Jammu region. The crop provides income to thousands of farming families and contributes significantly to rice exports. With sowing now underway, farmers are hopeful of favorable weather conditions and a strong harvest in the coming season.
