Bangladesh court grants bail to jailed Hindu rights leader; release from prison unlikely

Business To Business, Dhaka, 03 August, 2026:   The Chinmoy Krishna Das was granted bail by High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on Sunday in two cases, according to his lawyer.
However, the bail order will not result in his immediate release because he remains in custody in connection with four other criminal cases.
Background

  • Das, a Hindu monk and rights activist, was arrested in November 2024 on sedition charges over allegations of disrespecting Bangladesh's national flag.
  • His arrest triggered protests and heightened communal tensions in parts of the country.
  • Subsequently, authorities filed several additional cases against him, including allegations of:
    • Murder
    • Attempted murder
    • Vandalism
India's response
Following his arrest in 2024, the Government of India expressed "deep concern" and urged Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all other minority communities.
The latest High Court decision provides relief to Das in two of the cases against him, but his detention is expected to continue until he secures bail or other legal relief in the remaining pending cases.
