Bangladesh seeks new IMF-supported program: IMF

Business To Business, New York, 27th May, 2026: Bangladesh has requested a new support programme from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), according to a statement issued by the multilateral lender on Tuesday.
Ivo Krznar said IMF staff are currently in discussions with Bangladeshi authorities regarding:

  • Reform priorities
  • Economic policy measures
  • The framework for a possible new IMF-supported programme
He added that the International Monetary Fund remains committed to supporting Bangladesh in achieving:
  • Long-term macroeconomic stability
  • Financial sector resilience
  • Sustainable and inclusive economic growth
The proposed engagement comes as Bangladesh faces broader economic pressures linked to:
  • Inflation
  • Foreign exchange reserve management
  • External financing requirements
  • Global economic uncertainty
An IMF-supported programme typically involves:
  • Financial assistance
  • Economic reform commitments
  • Fiscal and monetary policy adjustments
  • Structural reform measures aimed at stabilising the economy
Bangladesh has previously worked with the IMF on economic support and reform initiatives amid changing global and domestic economic conditions.
