Bangladesh seeks new IMF-supported program: IMF
Business To Business, New York, 27th May, 2026: Bangladesh has requested a new support programme from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), according to a statement issued by the multilateral lender on Tuesday.
Ivo Krznar said IMF staff are currently in discussions with Bangladeshi authorities regarding:
- Reform priorities
- Economic policy measures
- The framework for a possible new IMF-supported programme
He added that the International Monetary Fund remains committed to supporting Bangladesh in achieving:
- Long-term macroeconomic stability
- Financial sector resilience
- Sustainable and inclusive economic growth
The proposed engagement comes as Bangladesh faces broader economic pressures linked to:
- Inflation
- Foreign exchange reserve management
- External financing requirements
- Global economic uncertainty
An IMF-supported programme typically involves:
- Financial assistance
- Economic reform commitments
- Fiscal and monetary policy adjustments
- Structural reform measures aimed at stabilising the economy
