Canada, India officials express optimism over trade pact talks

Business To Business, Toronto, 31st May, 2026:  Officials from Canada and India have expressed optimism about ongoing negotiations on a proposed free trade agreement, signalling renewed momentum in bilateral economic relations after talks stalled in 2023.
The discussions took place during the Western Canada–India Leaders Summit in Regina, attended by:

  • Scott Moe
  • Chris Cooter
  • Dinesh Patnaik
The summit focused on bilateral ties, trade opportunities, and negotiations on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two countries.
According to reports, Cooter expressed strong confidence that the negotiations would succeed, stating:
"The free trade agreement will happen. I have no doubt."
Significance of the proposed CEPA
The proposed CEPA aims to:
  • Reduce tariffs and trade barriers.
  • Increase bilateral trade and investment flows.
  • Strengthen cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, technology, manufacturing, energy, and services.
  • Provide businesses in both countries with improved market access.
India and Canada had made substantial progress on trade talks before negotiations were paused in 2023 amid diplomatic tensions. The renewed engagement is being viewed as a positive sign for economic cooperation.
Why it matters
Canada is an important supplier of commodities such as potash, pulses, and energy products, while India represents a large and rapidly growing market. A successful trade agreement could:
  • Boost exports from both countries.
  • Encourage greater investment.
  • Strengthen supply-chain cooperation.
  • Deepen broader strategic and economic ties.
The comments from both sides suggest that negotiators are working toward concluding an agreement later this year, although details of the remaining issues under discussion have not been publicly disclosed.
