China has cracked down on AI companions. What can we learn from this?

Business To Business, Dubai, 23^rd July, 2026:  Since the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in late 2022, the technology has transformed the way people write emails, complete assignments, prepare reports and even draft personal messages. Alongside these everyday applications, AI-powered "companion" chatbots have gained popularity as virtual friends designed to provide ongoing conversation and emotional support.
Many of these platforms allow users to customise their AI companions, including their appearance and personality, often through paid subscriptions. Promoted as offering positive, non-judgmental interactions, these chatbots promise companionship without the complexities and vulnerabilities that define human relationships.
Supporters argue that AI companions can benefit people experiencing loneliness or social isolation by providing constant availability and emotional support. Some studies also suggest that such chatbots may help reduce feelings of loneliness, chronic social disconnection and a lack of belonging. However, experts caution that while AI companions may offer temporary comfort, they cannot fully replace the depth, reciprocity and genuine emotional connection found in relationships with other people.
