China, Myanmar FMs hold talks, days after President Min Aung Hlaing's rare trip to India

Business To Business, Beijing, 5th June, 2026:    Wang Yi on Friday held talks in Beijing with Tin Maung Swe, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and supporting Myanmar's development.
Key focus of the talks
According to official accounts, the two sides discussed:

  • Expanding China–Myanmar cooperation.
  • Deepening bilateral ties.
  • Accelerating economic development projects.
  • Enhancing strategic and regional cooperation.
The meeting comes at a notable time, shortly after Min Aung Hlaing visited India on his first foreign trip following his election, a visit that attracted significant international attention.
China's role in Myanmar
In recent years, China has significantly expanded its presence in Myanmar through:
  • Infrastructure investments.
  • Energy projects.
  • Trade and connectivity initiatives.
  • Strategic cooperation with Myanmar's authorities.
A key element of China's engagement has been the development of transport and energy corridors linking China's southwestern provinces to the Bay of Bengal.
Strategic importance
Among the most significant projects are:
  • Oil pipelines connecting Myanmar's coast to China.
  • Natural gas pipelines traversing Myanmar.
  • Infrastructure projects under the broader China–Myanmar Economic Corridor framework.
These projects provide China with an alternative route for energy imports, reducing its reliance on the congested Strait of Malacca and giving it direct access to the Bay of Bengal.
Regional context
Myanmar remains strategically important for both China and India due to its geographic position between South Asia and Southeast Asia. As Myanmar seeks stability and economic recovery after years of conflict and political turmoil, major regional powers continue to engage with its leadership to advance economic, security, and connectivity interests.
The Wang–Tin meeting underscores Beijing's continuing commitment to maintaining its influence in Myanmar and advancing long-term strategic projects in the country.
