China responds positively to Trump's latest remarks on Taiwan

Business To Business, Beijing, 18th May, 2026: China appears to have welcomed what is being seen as a softer stance by Donald Trump on Taiwan’s independence following his recent visit to Beijing.

After concluding his state visit to China, Trump told Fox News
on Friday that the United States was not seeking a situation where “someone says let’s go independent because the United States is backing us”.

Trump also appeared uncertain about approving a proposed USD 11 billion weapons package for Taiwan, signalling possible caution in Washington’s approach toward the self-ruled island.

Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive issues in US-China relations, with Beijing viewing the island as part of its territory under the “One China” principle, while the US maintains unofficial ties and defence cooperation with Taiwan.
