Business Aajkal, Beijing, 17 June 2025: China is set to operationalise its third aircraft carrier, the 'Fujian,' this year, as it has nearly completed three years of sea trials, according to official media reports. This development marks a significant milestone, allowing the Chinese navy to operate three carrier groups for the first time.
The Fujian, identified as China's most advanced aircraft carrier, features an electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) similar to that used on the U.S. Navy's USS Gerald R. Ford. Launched in 2024, the carrier has undergone multiple sea trials, accumulating over 100 days at sea.
With a displacement of more than 80,000 tons and capable of carrying a wide range of carrier-borne aircraft—including fighter jets, early warning aircraft, anti-submarine aircraft, and drones—the entry of the Fujian signifies a new era for China's naval capabilities, as reported by state-run CCTV.
