Hong Kong democracy activist's long-awaited London reunion may be cut short

Business To Business, London, 27^th July, 2026:    Former Hong Kong pro-democracy lawmaker Wu Chi-wai has reunited with his wife and son in London after spending more than five years in prison, but now faces uncertainty over whether he will be allowed to remain in the United Kingdom.
Wu, the former chairman of Hong Kong's once-largest opposition party, was among 47 pro-democracy activists charged in 2021 under Beijing's national security law in the city's largest prosecution under the legislation.
In 2024, he was sentenced to four years and five months in prison after being convicted of conspiracy to commit subversion for his role in organising an unofficial primary election.
Following his release from prison last month, Wu travelled to the UK with the primary aim of reuniting with his family, who are now based there. Concerned that his criminal record might affect his entry, he said he had communicated in advance with the British consulate in Hong Kong.
However, after arriving in London last Wednesday, UK border authorities questioned whether his intentions extended beyond a family visit, including the possibility of seeking long-term residency, Wu told The Associated Press in an interview.
The development has left Wu uncertain about his immediate future, with the possibility that he could be required to return to Hong Kong much sooner than he had anticipated.
