Hottest day in May record broken for second time as UK swelters in heatwave

Business To Business, London, 27th May, 2026:   The United Kingdom on Tuesday recorded its hottest May day ever for the second consecutive day, with temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius in London.
According to the Met Office, the new record surpassed Monday’s peak of 34.8°C, which itself had broken the previous May record of 32.8°C set in 1944.
The Met Office said:
“Today is now the hottest day in May on record with Heathrow and Kew Gardens provisionally reaching 35.0 degrees C.”
The extreme temperatures were recorded at:

  • Heathrow Airport
  • Kew Gardens
The heatwave has intensified concerns across the UK regarding:
  • Public health impacts
  • Heat-related infrastructure strain
  • Climate change-linked extreme weather
  • Pressure on transport and energy systems
The unprecedented May temperatures reflect a broader pattern of increasingly frequent and intense heat events being observed across parts of Europe in recent years.
