IMF approves USD 695 million to Sri Lanka

Business To Business, New York, 28th May, 2026:   The International Monetary Fund has approved USD 695 million in funding for Sri Lanka as the country continues to manage economic pressures arising from Cyclone Ditwah and broader global geopolitical disruptions, including tensions in West Asia.
The IMF Executive Board cleared the disbursement following a combined review of Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic reform programme under its 48-month Extended Fund Facility (EFF), which totals about USD 2.4 billion.
According to the statement, Sri Lanka’s reform implementation has remained strong despite challenging external conditions. The IMF noted that progress under the programme has helped maintain economic stability and provided fiscal space to respond to recent shocks, including the cyclone and global conflict-related pressures.
IMF Deputy Managing Director Kenji Okamura said the reforms had contributed to economic resilience, enabling the country to better absorb external shocks while continuing its recovery path.
