Business To Business, New York, 14 September 2025: India boasts a population of 1.4 billion, yet it refuses to purchase even a modest quantity of American corn, remarked Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, emphasizing that New Delhi must reduce its tariffs or risk encountering significant difficulties in conducting commerce with the United States.
Lutnick articulated these sentiments during an interview on Saturday, when questioned about whether the United States is mishandling its “highly valuable relationships” with key allies such as India, Canada, and Brazil, through the tariffs imposed on these nations.
“The relationship appears asymmetrical; they sell to us and exploit the situation. They restrict our access to their markets, while we remain open, allowing them to enter and capitalize,” Lutnick stated. “The president advocates for ‘fair and reciprocal trade,’” he added.
