Keir Starmer resigns as UK PM, sets out timetable for new leader

Business To Business, London, 22nd June, 2026:  Keir Starmer on Monday announced that he will step down as both Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Labour Party.
The 63-year-old said he would remain in office until the governing Labour Party elects a new leader, with the transition process expected to be completed by September.
In his statement, Starmer pledged his "full and unequivocal support" to his successor and said he would work to ensure an orderly transfer of power.
Among the early contenders to replace him is Andy Burnham, who returned to the House of Commons after winning a crucial by-election last week.
Burnham confirmed his intention to enter the leadership contest, stating in a social media post: "I will put myself forward as part of this process."
The announcement sets the stage for a leadership race within Labour, with party members and parliamentarians expected to choose a new leader in the coming weeks. The winner will automatically become the next Prime Minister, as Labour currently leads the government.
Starmer's resignation marks a significant moment in British politics and opens a new chapter for both the Labour Party and the UK government as they prepare for a change in leadership.
