Nepal PM says Kathmandu, New Delhi exchanged notes on border dispute

Business To Business, Kathmandu, 31st May, 2026:  Balendra Shah on Sunday said that Nepal and India have agreed to involve historians, surveyors, and other experts in efforts to resolve their long-standing boundary dispute.
The dispute centres on the areas of Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura, located near the tri-junction of India, China (Tibet), and Nepal.
Speaking in Parliament, Shah said the Nepalese government had formally sent a diplomatic note to India regarding what Nepal describes as the encroachment of its territory, including Lipulekh, and had received a response from the Indian side.
According to Shah, both countries have agreed to seek expert assistance in examining historical records, maps, and survey data as part of the dialogue process.
Background of the dispute
The boundary disagreement has persisted for decades and intensified in recent years following differing interpretations of the origin of the Kali River, which is central to the territorial claims.

  • Nepal claims Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura as part of its territory based on its interpretation of historical treaties and maps.
  • India maintains that these areas are part of Uttarakhand and has consistently stated that the matter should be resolved through bilateral dialogue.
The decision to involve technical and historical experts is aimed at supporting diplomatic efforts by providing evidence-based assessments of the competing claims. Both countries have repeatedly expressed their commitment to resolving the issue through peaceful negotiations and mutual understanding.
