Nepal PM’s comments about ‘encroaching’ Indian land triggers controversy

Business To Business, Kathmandu, 31st May, 2026:  Balendra Shah on Sunday told Parliament that he had come across information suggesting that not only does Nepal allege encroachment of its territory by India, but there are also claims regarding Nepal's presence in areas considered Indian territory.
His remarks came while responding to questions on the long-running border dispute between the two countries.
Shah said Nepal and India have agreed to seek the assistance of historians, surveyors, and other experts to help find a resolution to the boundary issue. He also noted that Kathmandu has held diplomatic discussions related to the matter with China and the United Kingdom.
The disputed areas
The dispute centres on:

  • Kalapani
  • Lipulekh
  • Limpiyadhura
These regions are located near the tri-junction of India, Nepal, and Tibet (China).
Positions of the two countries
  • Nepal claims the areas based on its interpretation of historical maps and treaties, particularly concerning the source of the Kali River.
  • India maintains that the territories are part of Uttarakhand and has consistently stated that the issue should be resolved through bilateral dialogue.
Shah's comments indicate that Kathmandu is pursuing both diplomatic engagement and expert-led examination of historical and geographical evidence as part of efforts to address the dispute. Despite periodic tensions over the issue, both India and Nepal have repeatedly expressed their commitment to resolving boundary differences through peaceful negotiations.
