President Xi backs Myanmar counterpart, calls for advancing strategic projects

Business To Business, Beijing, 16th June, 2026:   Xi Jinping on Tuesday expressed support for Min Aung Hlaing and pledged continued cooperation as Myanmar grapples with an ongoing internal insurgency and security challenges.
During talks in Beijing, Xi said that China regards its relationship with Myanmar as a priority in its neighbourhood diplomacy.
Focus on strategic projects
A key theme of the discussions was the advancement of China-backed infrastructure and connectivity projects in Myanmar. Xi called for ensuring the safe construction and implementation of strategic projects, many of which are part of broader economic and connectivity initiatives linking the two countries.
These projects are generally aimed at:

  • Improving transport connectivity.
  • Expanding energy infrastructure.
  • Enhancing cross-border trade.
  • Strengthening economic cooperation.
  • Supporting regional development along the China–Myanmar corridor.
China's support for Myanmar
Xi's remarks signal Beijing's continued engagement with Myanmar's leadership at a time when the country faces armed resistance and political instability in several regions.
China has long maintained close economic and strategic ties with Myanmar and has emphasized:
  • Political stability.
  • Border security.
  • Protection of Chinese investments.
  • Expansion of bilateral trade.
  • Regional connectivity projects.
Min Aung Hlaing's visit
Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Beijing on Monday for a five-day visit.
The trip follows his recent visit to India, where he held talks with Narendra Modi and reportedly assured New Delhi that Myanmar's territory would not be allowed to be used against India's security interests.
Myanmar occupies an important position between South and Southeast Asia and provides China with access routes to the Indian Ocean. As a result, stability in Myanmar and the protection of Chinese-funded projects remain major concerns for Beijing.
The talks underscore China's intent to deepen cooperation with Myanmar while safeguarding its economic and strategic interests in the region.
