Ruling BNP authorises PM Rahman to finalise nominee for Bangladesh's presidential elections

Business To Business, Dhaka, 03 August, 2026:   The ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has authorised Tarique Rahman to select the party's candidate for Bangladesh's upcoming presidential election, according to local media reports.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the BNP's National Standing Committee on Saturday, the Dhaka Tribune reported. The meeting was chaired by Tarique Rahman, who serves as the party's acting chairman.
According to the report:

  • The BNP leadership unanimously empowered Tarique Rahman to make the final decision on the party's presidential nominee.
  • The move centralises the candidate selection process within the party's top leadership ahead of the presidential election.
  • The decision was approved during the National Standing Committee meeting held on Saturday.
The presidency in Bangladesh is largely a ceremonial office, with executive authority resting primarily with the prime minister under the country's parliamentary system. However, the selection of the presidential candidate remains politically significant as it reflects the ruling party's internal decision-making and broader political strategy.
