Sanctions threat to India would 'boomerang' under PM Modi's leadership: Putin

Business To Business, Singapore, 6th June, 2026:   Vladimir Putin has praised India's independent foreign policy and expressed confidence in the country's ability to withstand external pressure under the leadership of Narendra Modi.
Putin's remarks
Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday, Putin said:
"India always acts as a sovereign country, and under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, any potential threats of sanctions would boomerang immediately."
He made the comments while responding to a question about observations he had made during an interaction with heads of major international news agencies a day earlier.
Emphasis on sovereignty
Putin's remarks highlighted Russia's view that India pursues an independent foreign policy based on its national interests rather than external pressure.
The reference to sanctions comes against the backdrop of increasing geopolitical tensions and the use of economic sanctions by various countries as a foreign-policy tool.
India-Russia relations
Relations between India and Russia have traditionally been marked by cooperation in areas such as:

  • Defence and security.
  • Energy, including oil and nuclear power.
  • Trade and investment.
  • Space and scientific research.
Despite shifts in the global geopolitical landscape, both countries have continued to describe their relationship as a strategic partnership.
Context
Since the outbreak of major international conflicts and the imposition of sanctions on Russia by Western countries, India has maintained a position that emphasizes strategic autonomy, dialogue, and the pursuit of its own national interests.
Putin's comments appear to acknowledge that approach and underscore Moscow's view of India as an influential and independent global actor.
The remarks also reflect the personal rapport often highlighted by both Russian and Indian leaders in discussions of bilateral relations.
