Saudi Arabia says it shot down drones fired by Iran-backed militias in Iraq

Business To Business, Dubai, 28th July, 2026:   Saudi Arabia said on Monday that it had shot down drones launched by Iran-backed militias in Iraq, amid heightened regional tensions despite a recent pause in direct hostilities between the United States and Iran.
In a statement posted on social media, the Saudi Defence Ministry said the drones were aimed at petroleum facilities in the kingdom's eastern region as well as the capital, Riyadh.
Saudi authorities said the drones were successfully intercepted before reaching their targets. No casualties or damage were immediately reported.
The incident comes after the US and Iran paused military strikes against each other over the weekend following weeks of escalating confrontation that raised concerns about a broader regional conflict.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility from any militia group, and further details about the number of drones involved or the specific facilities targeted were not disclosed.
The development highlights the continuing security challenges in the Gulf region despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and prevent further escalation.
