Sri Lanka President calls for less consumption of imported goods and fuel use

Business To Business, Colombo, 20th May, 2026:   Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Wednesday urged people to reduce fuel usage and cut consumption of imported goods as part of efforts to curb the slide of the Sri Lankan rupee against the US dollar.
Addressing an event in Batticaloa, Dissanayake said the ongoing conflict in West Asia was negatively affecting economies around the world.
He said Sri Lanka had managed its economy carefully to prepare for the crisis and added that the government had sufficient rupee reserves in the treasury to deal with the situation.
The remarks come amid concerns over global energy prices and economic uncertainty linked to geopolitical tensions in the region.
