Sri Lanka's provincial elections unlikely until Parliament adopts 2018 delimitation report: EC official

Business To Business, Colombo, 14 September 2025: The postponed elections for Sri Lanka’s nine provincial councils are unlikely to be convened in the near future, as an official from the Election Commission stated on Sunday that these elections can only be conducted once Parliament passes the 2018 delimitation report.

Just last week, renewed appeals were made at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva for the prompt execution of these elections.

Election Commission Director General Saman Sri Ratnayake informed reporters on Sunday that the polls can only proceed once Parliament ratifies the 2018 delimitation report.
