Strait of Hormuz reopens: what it means for global energy security

Business To Business, Dubai, 19th June, 2026:   The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz brings to an end nearly four months of disruption that had driven crude oil prices higher and raised concerns about the security of global energy supplies.
The waterway resumed operations after a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, came into force, formally ending the conflict between the two countries.
Connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints, normally carrying around 20 percent of global energy shipments. Traffic through the strait had been severely disrupted since February 28, following joint military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran. The reopening is expected to ease pressure on international energy markets and improve the flow of oil and gas exports from the Gulf region.
